We rely on a lot of devices in our everyday life and unless they are being maintained well, they eventually break down. Businesses employ various maintenance strategies to enhance operational reliability and cut down on expenses. Let’s take a closer look.

Reactive Maintenance

When a device is not critical to the functioning of a business and is inexpensive, a business would typically just replace the device. For example, you would not take the trouble of maintaining a windshield washer nozzle. If it stops working, you would just replace it with a new one.

Preventive Maintenance

However, when a device is critical to the functioning of a business and would be expensive to replace or could result in safety issues, a business would try to prevent a breakdown through regular maintenance checks. For example, you would make sure that your car engine is serviced regularly rather than risk it breaking down.

Predictive Maintenance

The challenge with preventive maintenance is deciding when to do maintenance or replace a damaged part. If you replace a part too early, you end up wasting the still usable life of the part and if you delay replacing a damaged part, you risk a breakdown. Predictive maintenance lets you estimate the number of days to failure or analyze the problems in your devices and predict the chance that a drive will fail in the near future, say a month. This allows you to minimize downtime and maximize device life.

Predictive maintenance is based on algorithms developed to predict the risk that a drive will fail in the near future and whether you need to replace it. ULINK’s DA Drive Analyzer is based on such algorithms that help in predicting whether a drive is likely to fail soon. In the next post, we will look at how predictive technology can be used to predict drive failures.
